Metro announced Thursday that April 14 is the date that riders can finally step on a Metro car that is completely free of vinyl orange seats.
After riding around the system during months of testing, the 7000-series is making its debut on the Blue line. The first regular passenger train will leave from Franconia-Springfield shortly after 7 a.m. in just less than three weeks.
“The 7000-series is an entirely new generation of railcars at Metro—a fleet that is, by design, revolutionary as opposed to evolutionary,” Metro Interim General Manager Jack Requa said in a release. He was referring to the fact that previous generations of railcars were designed to be backwards compatible with the older fleet. The 7000-series cars will never be coupled with older cars.
Metro has ordered 528 of the cars, with the intent of replacing the entire 1000-series (which have been in service since the system’s opening in 1976) and the 4000-series (which date to 1991 and have been a major headache for Metro).
