Tommy Wells became the director of the D.C.’s Department of the Environment. David Catania returned to his law practice. And Jim Graham has gone into the strip club business.
The Washington Blade reports that the former Ward 1 Council member is working as the special events director for The House, a Georgia Avenue strip club. He will be promoting the venue as a gay, male strip club on Sunday nights as well as a weekly Thursday night event with male strippers that is geared toward straight women.
The gig is in addition to work he is doing as a consultant for the nonprofit Clean and Sober, the Blade reports. “I didn’t explore any full-time jobs with the government ultimately because I decided I didn’t want to be anywhere near the political vortex,” Graham said.
“I’ve been through a lot of public controversy,” he told Metro Weekly. “I don’t know why there would be that much more associated with this, because it’s a business venture, I’m a private citizen, and it’s fully legal. I know it’s considered an unusual path for a former D.C. councilmember, but it’s preferable to peddling influence, which is what some councilmembers do. I’m peddling entertainment.”
Clearly he has a flair for marketing. The Blade reports that his signature bowties will continue to play a role—just in a very different fashion.
In a takeoff on his well-known use of bowties as a fashion statement during his years as a Council member, Graham said all of the nude male dancers will be wearing one of the hundreds of bowties he has in his wardrobe. “They are going to put them on and at some point they will dispose of the bow ties in the audience,” said Graham. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The weekly male strip club, dubbed Rock Hard Sunday, debuts this weekend with a grand opening party. A third of the $15 cover charge will benefit Whitman Walker Health, which Graham led between 1981 and 1998.
