On the same day that the U.S. announced the approval of licenses to begin ferry service between several Florida cities and Cuba, the D.C. area also got some good Cuban travel news: Swift Air will begin flying non-stop between BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and Havana on September 30.
Options to get to the island nation from the D.C. area currently involve at least one layover, usually in Panama City. A Kayak search for mid July shows tickets from $704-$1295 on Copa Airlines or “hacker fares” hobbled together with several airlines.
But come the fall, Americans taking advantage of the relaxed travel ban can hop a flight and be in Havana in three hours and fifteen minutes. The twice weekly flights will depart on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:20 a.m. and return at 1:25 p.m., according to operator Island Travel & Tours, Ltd.
A roundtrip flight will cost $775, a booking agent said.
