Police have issued a warrant for 18-year-old Jasper Spires on charges of first-degree murder while armed in the case. They warned the public not to approach him.

Sutherland, who had recently started working as a digital political strategist at New Blue Interactive, previously interned for a Connecticut congressman.

“Am absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of intern, staffer & wonderful friend, Kevin Sutherland. I’ve known few as selfless & decent,” tweeted Rep. Jim Himes, who changed his photo to one with his former intern.

Sutherland was also a two-time student government secretary at American University, which he graduated from in 2013.

“Kevin Sutherland was truly the best of us,” Sasha Gilthorpe, the current AU student government president, wrote in a statement Sunday. “He was incredibly kind. He was utterly and completely devoted to his friends. He used his intelligence and his talents to champion what he believed in.”

Spires had been arrested earlier in the week on an unrelated robbery charge, according to the Washington Post. He was released a day before the Metro attack. Authorities believe the stabbing was also part of a robbery attempt.

Police ask anyone with information about Spire’s whereabouts to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
