K Street is losing two parking spaces, but gaining the District’s first seasonal parklet.

The Golden Triangle Business Improvement District has commissioned a mini street park for a pair of spots in front of 2020 K Street. NW. They’ve dubbed it “parKIT.”

The parklet is being constructed today and tomorrow and the BID will host an official ribbon cutting on July 14 at 11:30 a.m. The installation will stay up through October, which means it will be around for the annual September celebration of temporary parking spot parks: PARK(ing) day.

Two Gensler designers created the design, which will have triangle planters, movable pieces, and triangular extrusions that vary in height (notice a theme?) It will also play host to weekly activities themed “making the city.”

“We are always looking for more ways for people to enjoy the outdoors in our great neighborhood,” Leona Agouridis, executive director of the Golden Triangle BID, said in a release. While we have many parks, this is a fun way to think differently about a part of our community.”

Under a pilot program from the District Department of Transportation, groups can apply for a permit to put a public parklet in a metered on-street parking space for up to one year. Logan Circle’s Slipstream Coffee has been working to bring one to 14th Street.
