A man allegedly high on synthetic drugs was arrested yesterday evening after attacking a senior citizen while waiting for a bus in Chinatown, according to police.

A Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson says that at the intersection of 7th and H Streets NW, at approximately 8:06 p.m., MPD units patrolling the area responded to an incident in which a man was attacking another man while waiting at the bus stop.

According to NBC4’s Jackie Benson, who was at the scene, the suspect “knocked the unsuspecting man to the ground and kicked him in the head on the busy street.” When police arrived at the scene, the suspect screamed that he could “take them all,” then “sat on the curb, smiled, and laughed.”

Benson says that police on the scene believe the suspect was overdosing on synthetic drugs and transported him to the hospital. The MPD PIO confirms the suspect was transported to the hospital but did not have any information about an alleged synthetic drugs overdose. The victim suffered minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital.

Recently, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration passed legislation to crack down on the recent rise of overdoses and violence related to synthetic drugs, including synthetic marijuana known as Spice, Scooby Snax, K2, Bizarro, and more.

The suspect was charged with simple assault.
