D.C.’s MuralsDC project, in its eighth year, has announced where six new murals are going this summer. The six murals, in Wards 1, 2, 4, and 6, will join 54 others in all eight Wards of the city. They’re scheduled to be completed throughout September.

The project was started in 2007 to “replace illegal graffiti with artistic works, to revitalize sites within communities in the District of Columbia, and to teach young people the art of aerosol painting.”

People nominate sites that are often tagged; with the permission of the property owner, MuralsDC chooses an artist and works with the community to come up with a design. Then community members plus the lead artist paint the mural.

Here’s where the new ones are going up:

  • 520 8th Street SE: Artist James Bullough, originally from D.C., will come back from Berlin (where he lives now) to paint a mural on the side of Senarts Oyster and Chophouse. Here’s one of his previous MuralsDC works.
  • 2001 15th Street NW: This appears to be the Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartments. Aaron Scales of artist collective BroCoLoco will design and paint this one. Some of BroCoLoco’s previous work can be seen here.
  • First & D Streets NW: D.C. resident Rose Jaffe will paint a mural on the side of D.C.’s Federal City Shelter. Her work can be seen across D.C. Here’s some of her work.
  • 1017 New Jersey Avenue SE: “Chicago native Rahmaan Statik fuses graffiti and classic artistic training to his murals to help portray and enhance the urban experience.” Some of his Chicago murals can be seen here.
  • 2015 Massachusetts Avenue NW: D.C. native Cita Sadeli, aka Chelove, returns for her fifth year participating in MuralsDC. This mural on the Metropolitan Branch Trail is partly hers.
  • 1400 Decatur Street NW: The NYC-San Francisco-based artist collective Trust Your Struggle comes to D.C. Here’s some of their work.
