A 22-year-old woman was shot by a D.C. police officer Saturday after refusing to release a knife. Renita Nettles was charged with assault on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and arson on Sunday, WUSA9 reported.
Saturday evening, shortly after 6:15pm, Fire and EMS were called in response to a fire coming from a row house in the 5300 block of Clay Terrace NE. As firefighters fought the fire, police received a call about Nettles, “a woman with a knife,” Police Chief Cathy Lanier said.
Video taken by bystanders shows portions of what happened, including neighbors screaming to Nettles to drop the weapon. After she refused to comply, an unnamed officer fired one round, which hit Nettles in the shoulder.
Nettles lived in the home that caught on fire with her mother, according to neighbors. She is said to be hospitalized and in stable condition.
While the police union is arguing the shooting was justified, neighbors disagreed. “She ain’t harming nobody. All she was saying was, I’m not scared of you,” Kenneth Johnson told WUSA9.
