When Oy Changsila, owner of Sala Thai, was approached by Donatelli Development to open a location at Park 7, he didn’t know the multi-use complex was in a food desert. “But after I looked at the project, my friend said ‘you’ll be damn busy,’” says Changsila.
With five locations, there are more Sala Thai restaurants throughout the D.C. area than there are sit-down restaurants in all of Ward 7.
Since throwing open their doors for a soft opening earlier this week, the “authentic Thai food” aroma has lured government employees from the neighboring Department of Employment Services building, he says. “The main thing is the government gives 45 minutes to one hour for a lunch break, so we have to be quick, fast, and consistent.”
In its third day, the space had also serviced teachers from Friendship Collegiate Academy and local residents—making each day more profitable than the next, says waitress Lakarra Jackson, who lives in walking distance of the space.
For now, patrons get a taste of appetizers and a full bar, with a 25 percent off discount. Each week, Changsila plans to sling out more dishes until the entire menu is on the table.
The restaurant’s grand opening is slated for November 6, with an appearance from Mayor Bowser, Changsila says. Then, he plans to “get to know the neighborhood more and mail out the menu so people can come out at night and have family dinners.”
