It’s official. Paul Wiedefeld is Metro’s new general manager. He was just sworn in at the WMATA board meeting.

The former CEO of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and director of the Maryland Transit Authority finalized his contract with WMATA. Wiedefeld will make $397,500 annually, with the possibility of a yearly bonus of up to 20 percent of his total salary. For the first six months, he will also get a $4,000 housing stipend, according to Adam Tuss of NBC4.

All of Metro’s follies and failures will end up on Wiedefeld’s desk when he starts on November 30, like this morning’s single-tracking on the Red Line, or WMATA’s unfunded $6 billion wishlist. So let’s take a moment to remember when his tenure was full of hope and the promise of a better public transportation system.

We at DCist welcome Paul Wiedefeld with the power of song—”Paul Wiedefelds of Gold.” Without further ado, sing along to our modified lyrics.

WIEDEFELD OF GOLD
(to the tune of Sting’s “Fields of Gold”)

You’ll remember me when the Blue Line moves after delays for single-tracking
You’ll forget the smoke swirling up the tracks as we step back for closing doors
So the Feds will watch, ‘cuz they’re keeping track of all the single-tracking
In our yearlong search we have looked to you to open all our doors

Will you stay with us, will you be the man for whom we’re single-tracking?
We’ll forget you were not our number one, when Neil Cohen closed the door
See your salary grow higher than Sarles, if you happen to be tracking
Feel our ire grow as we blame you for every single closing door

Don’t make us promises lightly, because we’ll sniff out every one you’ve broken
But I swear we will make it worth your while to step back for closing doors
We’ll step back for closing doors

Many years have passed since auditors have claimed our numbers aren’t tracking
See the people run towards the options of bike share and Uber’s doors
You’ll remember when you decided that GM was your career track
You can tell your fam it was a great idea to step back for closing doors
When you became our Wiedefeld of gold, you are our Wiedefeld of gold.
