With a stadium in the works and a recently redesigned crest, the next stage in the evolution of D.C. United’s identity is a new kit. Although the uniforms aren’t slated to be officially unveiled until an event on Saturday, Sports Illustrated published an early peek of the jersey… and part of the inside.
As SI notes, Adidas rather missed the mark on the collar tape, bungling the city’s motto—you know the one that graces our license plates—into “Without Representation Taxation.”
“Without Representation, Taxation” – it’s almost like George W Bush returned to DC to write jersey mottos

“Without representation, taxation!” doesn’t quite have the right ring, does it? https://t.co/2dBD2lRRfm #DCU

This was presumably part of the team’s effort to coordinate with DC Vote and advocate for statehood. They tweeted: “Definitely not how we expected to get #DCEquality featured in Sports Illustrated.”
“It’s been great to work with DC Vote, and I’m all for equality for D.C.,” coach Ben Olsen told The Washington Post in May. “District statehood and budget autonomy make so much sense.”
Meanwhile, another part of the jersey looks kind of familiar, too.
You kidding me, @dcunited? Detail on your new kit looks A LOT like our @DCist logo…#DCU #NewDCU pic.twitter.com/6tJwcGRjon

As @wisemana just pointed out to me, the detail is nearly identical to our old logo at @DCist: pic.twitter.com/xEg3kwdNVw

Certainly we don’t own the rights to black-and-white silhouettes of city monuments. But, as pointed out by DCist contributors Pablo Maurer and Andrew Wiseman, the resemblance is pretty uncanny—particularly to the original version of the logo (which was designed back in 2004 by Sam Park and updated in 2009 by Lynne Venart).
