Repairs to a damaged elevator control box have been completed, and the Washington Monument is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. after a four-day closure.
The issue was inadvertently caused by a contractor who was working on a separate issue, according to the National Park Service. They specified that “it is not the result of any mechanical failure in the elevator, or any other system.”
The temporary closure comes after a series of failures over the spring and summer. It happened often enough that Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton met with NPS and sought assurances that they were working on solving the underlying issues.
“I am concerned that this latest breakdown of the most important elevator in the nation’s capital should not become the continuation of a trend that we have seen since the elevator reopened in 2014 following major efforts to repair damages from the 2011 earthquake, and again last summer during the peak of the summer tourism season,” Norton said in a statement.
