Green thumbs everywhere, take heed. First Lady Michelle Obama is going on a nationwide garden tour, and she kicked it off by surprising a bunch of delighted students at local D.C. elementary schools.

When the First Lady arrived at the White House, one of the first things she did as part of her Let’s Move! campaign was plant a kitchen garden on the South Lawn. Now, on the seventh anniversary of breaking ground, the garden continues to grow. Some of the fruits, veggies, and herbs go towards meals at the White House, while other foodstuffs get donated to Miriam’s Kitchen.

On the Today Show this morning, she said that she’s heard from lots of people inspired by the White House Kitchen Garden to create their own planting beds to fuel their meals, and she wants to visit them.

The tour started at D.C.’s Watkins Elementary School in Capitol Hill. Watkins has a garden thanks to its involvement in Foodprints, a program in six different D.C. Public Schools that melds gardening, cooking, and nutrition education. The students seem utterly thrilled as they all make tacos.

From there, Obama headed to John Burroughs Elementary School in Brookland, which has an extensive garden program thanks to a partnership with the Washington Youth Garden. Greeted by a hug, she separated worms from soil with the students and helped them prepare seeds for the spring.

She rounded out her tour by staying in Brookland and visiting Eriks Brolis and Linda Bilsens—a husband and wife team that uses a garden filling the entire lot adjacent to their yard to feed friends and family elderberries, serviceberries, apples, pears, hazelnuts, and more. Brolis, along with his brother, is the co-founder of Urban Farm Plans, which helps city folk cultivate gardens to provide nourishment.

While the Let’s Move! team released the video today, the visit occurred in late February.

Obama has put out the call to scope out other gardens throughout the U.S. as part of her tour, whether they be in schools, backyards, or elsewhere. We know she’s headed to Austin in March for SXSW, so she may tack on some tours there.
