Metromageddon has been a hit so far, at least for some of us. It’s like a snow day, only with warm spring sunshine, sanctioned teleworking, and free Bikeshare memberships for everyone. If this is life without Metro, bring it on.
If you got a chance to stay in your own ‘hood today, then you may have slipped out for lunch to the places you don’t usually get a chance to visit, scoring what is arguably D.C.’s signature sandwich, the G-Man, at Mangialardo & Sons on Capitol Hill—which is only open on weekdays for breakfast and lunch—or the freshest half-smoke of the week at Meats & Foods in Bloomingdale. However, if you were chained to your laptop and missed out on lunch, don’t fret: there are #ShutdownSpecials popping up all over town today, offering up plenty of pre-gaming options for tomorrow’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Here’s just a few scattered across the city’s four quadrants:
Ambar (523 8th Street SE): Half-priced specialty cocktails, like the minty Grappa Smash, starting at 4 p.m. all the way until closing.
Bayou Bakery (901 Pennsylvania Avenue SE): $2.15 (the price of a Metro farecard) off any sandwich, chips, and soda combo—plus their regular Wednesday happy hour, which starts at 5 p.m. with a surprise drink special.
Bluejacket (300 Tingey Street SE): The patio and bar are open, with a $4 special until 6 p.m. on two of their most popular brews, Forbidden Planet and Lost Weekend, along with their house-made tater tots.
Cuba Libre (801 9th Street NW): Mention “Metro to Havana” to your server and get a free glass of cava with any food purchase.
Granville Moore’s (1238 H Street NE): $2 off all drafts all day, with a rotating selection of Belgian and other brews.
Smoke & Barrel (2471 18th Street NW): They opened at noon today with a limited food menu until 5 p.m. and 1/2 priced drafts until 7 p.m.
Station 4 (1101 4th Street SW): Get a start on cherry blossom season with $4 Smuttynose Smoked Cherry Short Weisse, being served all day both on the patio and in the dining room.
Takoda (715 Florida Avenue NW): Get an extra hour for the extra commute at today’s Half-Price Whiskey and Wings Happy Hour, starting at 5 and extended to 8 p.m.
