The bald patch on the National Mall between 7th Street to 14th Street will soon be sprouting lush new grass.
The turf restoration project that began in September of 2014 is entering its final phase, starting with the first rolls of more than 522,000 square feet of sod. It should take around five weeks to complete.
But you’ll still have to wait a little while to frolic through it, as the area will remained fenced off to give the sod time to take root. NPS also needs to rebuild the infrastructure—like walkways and benches—that were ripped up for the project, according to National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst. “The timetable to have the panels open remains to be seen, but the Mall will be open in time for the inauguration in January,” he says.
Previous work included the excavation of four to five feet of damaged soil, as well as the installation of an irrigation system, a 250,000 gallon cistern, as well as “compaction-resistant engineered soil.”
The area between 3rd and 7th Street underwent a similar restoration and reopened in 2012, sporting a beautiful new lawn that came with new regulations to protect the work.
