Grab those adult coloring pencils. The National Park Service has officially joined the cult of the coloring book, with some help from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
JGL runs an “open-collaborative production company” called hitRECord. No, we don’t fully understand what that means, but apparently their past work has ranged from documenting Occupy Wall Street and making a TV show, to collaborating on a coloring book—along with a hat, baby onesie, tote bag, t-shirts, and animated safety videos—for the National Park Service’s centennial.
Taking inspiration from the “Find Your Park” campaign and the New Age-y trend of meditating one’s troubles away whilst hunched over intricate images, Gordon-Levitt and co. created a 92-page coloring book that renders America’s iconic parks into black-and-white canvases.
“The hitRECord community was truly inspired by the history of the parks, paying homage to the past while looking to the future as a creative collective with some very cool initiatives that cross over art, music, and fashion,” Gordon-Levitt said in a statement.
Proceeds from the sales benefit the National Park Foundation, the “official charity of America’s national parks.” The $20 coloring book is now on pre-sale, while other items from the collab are already available online.
