A Secret Service officer shot a man who was brandishing a weapon at a security checkpoint near the White House this afternoon. He was critically injured and transported to the hospital, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.
Officers on site gave multiple verbal commands to the man to drop his weapon, the Secret Service said in a statement, before shooting him once and taking him into custody.
The White House was briefly on lockdown after the shooting on West Executive Drive, near 17th Street NW. President Barack Obama was not on site (he is golfing at Joint Base Andrews).
