Freedom has flown her coop at the National Arboretum. The two-month-old Bald Eagle took her first flight yesterday afternoon.
Offspring of “Mr. President” and “The First Lady,” Freedom and her brother Liberty were born in March as thousands of people glued their eyes to the DC Eagle Cam. Later that month, the National Arboretum announced its Name the Nestlings campaign, in which voters chose the bald eagles’ current monikers, which prevailed options like Honor and Glory.
Liberty is expected to take his first flight soon as well, Al Cecere of the American Eagle Foundation said last week. After taking off, the eagles may return to the nest to feed while they learn to hunt for themselves, Cecere said.
