The eldest first child has graduated from Sidwell Friends School, meaning that those of you who remember Malia Obama as a 10 year old on Election Night 2008 are officially geezers. They grow up so fast!

While prominent relatives of Sidwell grads often give the commencement speech, including Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, President Barack Obama opted not to do so.

“Malia’s school asked if I wanted to speak at commencement and I said no,” he said back in January. “I’m going to be wearing dark glasses … and I’m going to cry.”

Instead, author and poet Elizabeth Alexander, a 1980 alumna of Sidwell, gave the speech.

While Malia accepted a place at Harvard University, she announced in May that she’s first taking a gap year. This prompted an entire cottage industry of hot takes about the trend. Is it the ultimate sign of luxury? Or are there legit reasons for your kid to try it? Are gap years risky or the right thing to do?

The Obama family is staying in D.C. at least until Sasha, Malia’s younger sister, finishes high school. Surely Malia will be allowed to crash at the nine-bedroom mansion they’re renting in Kalorama after the president’s term ends in 2017.

But that doesn’t mean she will. “I think Malia … is very eager to get out of here,” the president told Jimmy Fallon this week.
