A cyclist was hit and killed in Southeast this morning by a driver who fled before police arrived at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police Department received a call about the crash around 1:10 a.m., an MPD spokesperson told DCist. The incident occurred near the John Phillip Sousa Bridge on the 2600 block Minnesota Avenue, which police closed while investigating.
The cyclist has not been identified, according to D.C. police, who also cannot confirm that any witnesses were on the scene.
At least six bicyclists were killed in crashes in D.C. between 2010 and 2014, WAMU reported. There was also one cyclist death in the District in 2015, according to Colin Browne of the Washington Area Bicyclists Association.
Browne adds that although the District’s Vision Zero plan could be more ambitious, it’s a good start to addressing the issue of traffic fatalities. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation released the action plan last year with a goal of eliminating all traffic deaths or injuries in D.C. by 2024.
