Per a 2013 law, the District’s minimum wage rises by a dollar today to $11.50.
It is the final scheduled hike as part of that legislation, after which the wage would have been tied to inflation. But after a ballot initiative picked up steam, the D.C. Council recently passed another bill to raise the base wage to $15 an hour, and the tipped wage to $5, by 2020.
The mayor signed that legislation this week, notching another win for the Fight for $15 movement and earning praise from President Barack Obama.
Under that law, the minimum wage will go up to $12.50 next year, $13.25 in 2018, and $14 in 2019, before reaching $15 in 2020, after which it will be tied to inflation. The tipped minimum wage goes up to $3.33 next year, $3.89 in 2018, $4.45 in 2019, and $5 in 2020, after which it will also be pegged to the inflation rate. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that 114,000 people will benefit, 80 percent of whom are people of color.
In Maryland, the minimum wage rises today by $.50 to $8.75. And in Montgomery County it goes up from $9.55 to $10.75 an hour.
