Reminds us of: A whodunit meets Seinfeld.
Flop, Fine, or Fringe-tastic?: Fringe-tastic.
Imagine being engrossed in the most gripping story you’ve ever heard, and then finding out it’s a lie. That’s what you can expect from “Perfect Liars Club,” which returned to the Capital Fringe Festival yesterday for a five-show run.
A few dozen people settled in the basement of MLK Library last night to hear from four storytellers. While three of them were depicting actual events, one person’s tale was laced with falsities. Each person took about ten minutes for a blast from the past. Melissa talked about client drama she experienced while working as a hair stylist in Georgetown. Keith told us how he managed to talk his way out of a robbery while overseas as a Peace Corps member. Meredith recalled how her high school crush fizzled after she found out the guy was a possible racist. John gave us a glimpse into a three day road trip with his wife that included a flat tire, locked car keys, a recovering crack addict, and lots of weed. Each person’s recount felt natural, and the stories were wildly entertaining.
After listening intently, audience members asked the group follow-up questions. While each person didn’t have all the answers, they kept their cool and responded sufficiently enough to make it anyone’s game. Then, by a show of hands, the club’s host surveyed the audience to find out who they thought was the liar. The crowd was overwhelmingly wrong. But one woman won a prize after a judge decided that she asked the best interrogation question.
The length of each story was perfect, the details were captivating, and the mystery behind it all makes it a show worth seeing.
Each performance will feature different stories. The remaining performances are July 10 at 1:30 p.m., July 13 at 7 p.m., July 16 at 3:30 p.m., July 20 at 7:15 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library.
