A tractor-trailer carrying a shipment of tomatoes crashed and caught fire on I-66 this morning.
Police believe that fatigue was a factor in the crash, which occurred while the truck was traveling eastbound under the Route 15 overpass in Gainesville. The vehicle hit the guardrail and kept going for about one-tenth of mile, ripping off the saddle tank open and off the truck, before coming to a stop and then catching fire, officials said. Local fire crews were able to quickly put out the blaze.
The driver, Jose E. Martinez, was pulled out of the truck by construction workers and suffered minor injuries. He has been charged with reckless driving, according to Virginia State Police.
The westbound lanes of 1-66 re-opened at 9 a.m., about an hour after the crash. The eastbound lanes remain closed as crews work to remove the burned tractor-trailer and clean up the roasted tomatoes. It is unclear when they will re-open. The Virginia Department of Transportation is assessing the stability of the bridge.
Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
