Original: D.C. Police has confirmed that an officer shot someone this afternoon in Petworth after the man allegedly opened fire on Georgia Ave.

The person, who police are calling a suspect, was transported to a local hospital conscious and breathing, says MPD spokesperson Aquita Brown.

The shooting happened on the 3800 block of Georgia Ave. NW, about a block from the Georgia Ave./Petworth Metro station. Police received the call at 1:46 p.m., according to Brown.

MPD Assistant Chief Peter Newsham spoke on the scene around 3 p.m., saying that a beat cop on a mountain bike arrived in the area after he “was alerted to the sound of gun shots” and found a suspect “firing rounds … we don’t know what he was firing at but the officer engaged. He discharged his service weapon.”

Newsham said that police recovered a handgun at the scene.

Brown and Newsham, the forthcoming interim chief, says that officers who were on the scene are not injured, nor were any bystanders.

Newsham said that the person who was shot is in surgery now “so his exact condition won’t be known until he gets out of surgery.”

Georgia Ave. is blocked in all directions as police investigate, and drivers are being advised to choose an alternate route.
