You probably thought you were safe from saying “It’s October 3rd” until October 3, 2017, but Mean Girls, like real-life queen bees, aren’t so easily begged off.
On October 3, the unofficial holiday of the 2004 blockbuster, official social media channels for the film announced it will make its premiere as a stage musical in D.C. next fall.

As Playbill reports, Tina Fey, who penned the film’s script, is working with lyricist Nell Benjamin (who worked on Legally Blonde, another film turned musical) and Fey’s husband, composer Jeffrey Richmond.
The film follows Cady Heron, played by Lindsey Lohan, as she returns to high school after years of homeschooling and attempts to navigate the high school hierarchy, deciding whether she wants to destroy the popular “Plastics” or become one of them.
While Mean Girls has a “Jingle Bell Rock” song and dance number, in addition to Kevin G’s epic rap, Fey told Andy Cohen that she expects the long-rumored musical to have a classic Broadway sound, according to Playbill.
It’s not clear which local theater will host the debut, with musical mainstays Signature Theatre, Arena Stage, and Ford’s Theatre all telling Playbill they’re not involved. Here’s hoping wherever it is has assigned seats, because I couldn’t handle being told “You can’t sit with us.”
In recent years, D.C. has become more of a launch pad for musicals en route to Broadway, though Fey joked that would happen “in 2027… whenever Hamilton closes.”
