The increasingly saturated fast casual market is losing the Chipotle of Southeast Asian food.
In an earnings call on the last day of a month-long promotion with the D.C. Public Library, Chipotle said it is giving up on investing in their ShopHouse concept, leaving the eight restaurants in D.C. and Maryland (and seven in California and Illinois) in limbo.
“After operating in three diverse markets, we have determined ShopHouse hasn’t demonstrated an attractive unit economic model,” CEO Steve Ells said on the call.
Instead of noodle bowls, Chipotle will focus on its pizza and burger fast casual concepts: Pizzeria Locale and Tasty Made (not to be confused with D.C.’s Tasty Burger).
As Eater reports, the future of the remaining stores are unclear. But ShopHouse’s social media managers have been consoling desolate fans but reminding them that the restaurants are actually still open.
