“You have to stay encouraged, don’t get cynical, don’t ever think you can’t make a difference,” President Barack Obama told the heartbroken half of the nation this afternoon, shortly after Hillary Clinton delivered her concession speech.
“The path this country has taken has never been a straight line. We zig and zag,” Obama said, echoing Clinton’s encouragement to continue fighting for the greater good.
Calling politics an “intramural scrimmage,” Obama told the nation that “we are all on the same team. The president said he spoke to Trump around 3:30 a.m., congratulating the president-elect and inviting him to the White House. “I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to make sure the next president is successful,” Obama said today. “We are all rooting for his success.”
“The sun is up,” the president said, “that’s one bit of prognosticating that actually came true.”
