D.C., as a city, overwhelmingly repudiated President-elect Donald Trump. Just 4 percent of Washingtonians cast their ballot for him. If you count neighboring counties, that figures increases to only 17 percent. As WAMU points out, that makes the city and region a more liberal mecca than just about anywhere else in the country.
It hasn’t stopped hate crimes and other incidents of racism and xenophobia.
And while the president-elect might be blaming the media for elevating “a very small amount” of threatening behavior—doing everything short of sticking his fingers in his ears and screaming la-la-la-la-la-la-la “I don’t hear any hate,” we certainly do.

“‘Trump Nation Whites only”: Silver Spring’s diverse Church of Our Saviour woke up Sunday to that message on the back of a sign that advertised a mass in Spanish. It was punctuated by slashes from a knife. The same phrase was written on a brick wall in an outdoor memorial garden.
“Welcome to America”: On the Green line on Friday, a passenger unleashed a verbal attack. “It’s America. Welcome to America,” the unidentified man yells on a crowded car to a man off camera. “Does he know what deodorant is? Is he ever going to wear some, in America?”
“We don’t want the foreigners here if they want to permanently live here. This is not your home”: A man on the 80 bus on Friday evening decried immigrants, citing the president-elect. A video of the incident captures him saying: “What Donald Trump says: you’re just visitors. You don’t come here marrying nobody from America.” According to a Jessica Raven, who heads a non-profit that works to end public sexual harassment and assault, he also shouted that Latinos need to leave the U.S. or Trump will have to resort to “the final solution.”

Swastika spotted in Ward 4. Someone before I came in tried to modify it, but the fact is someone still drew it in the first place. pic.twitter.com/ehaD5tpLQV

“Go Trump”: At American University, someone drew a swastika in the name of the President-elect in a classroom. Someone else modified it to read “go Drumpf, peace, and love” and changed the Nazi symbol to an octagon. “I’ve seen photos of these racist symbols across the country but I guess I didn’t expect it at AU,” sophomore Shelby Moring told the school newspaper after encountering the image.
“It’s a good thing you’ll all be gone soon”: An apparent veteran coming from Arlington Cemetery told a stranger near the Metro that he “didn’t go Vietnam to serve you,” shouting “it’ll be great again soon.”

“Swastikas drawn in ink pen, in pencil and with glue stick:” Parents at a middle school in Montgomery County received a letter informing them that a boys bathroom had been vandalized with swastikas in multiple mediums.
“KILL KILL KILL BLACKS”: Those words were found on a bathroom at another Montgomery County school—this time the Sligo Creek Elementary School.

“MAKE AMERICA SMART AGAIN / FOR EVERY LOVELY ON THE DOLE,/ MANDATORY BIRTH CONTROL” About a block from one of the city’s biggest homeless shelters, someone advocated for forced sterilization, according to a Georgetown law student who sent this image.

Someone scrawled “MOP HEAD” and “no pork” in a Chinatown intersection that has been painted with a representation the Chinese zodiac. The same site saw repeated instances of anti-Semitic graffiti over the summer.
“You better get ready to go back to your home country”: A stranger wearing a Make America Great Hate went up to commuter of Bangladeshi descent and made that declaration on a Green line train.
