The ongoing and oncoming assault on American political norms aside, the U.S. Capitol hasn’t physically looked this good in decades.
The Architect of the Capitol announced today that a massive restoration effort is officially complete, after removing 14 layers of lead paint, applying 1,215 gallons of “Dome White,” repairing 1,300 cracks and deficiencies in the cast iron, and removing more than a million pounds of scaffolding.
The nearly three-year, $60 million project began in 2014. It was the first major overhaul of the dome since 1960. And, as promised, it has been completed in time for the 2017 inauguration—which promises to be a bitterly divided event in the District.
“It is important that we take a moment to celebrate and share the fine work done here,” said Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers. “Thank you for your support and patience as we restored this beautiful building for all to appreciate and enjoy.”
