Even Shadow Senator Paul Strauss had a car in the parade. And a classic one, to boot.

When the National Policy Institute held its post-election conference this past weekend, the alt-right white nationalist group was met by protesters who objected to its message.

Before the conference even began on Saturday, though, people affiliated with the group Smash Racism DC demonstrated outside of Maggiano’s, an Italian restaurant in Friendship Heights, where NPI-affiliated participants were holding a dinner.

This NBC Washington report captures the scene outside Maggiano’s, where protesters briefly entered but were unable to reach the dinner.

For a look at what went down inside, take a look at former reality star and featured event guest Tila Tequila’s Twitter feed:

(Many of the dinner’s other attendees, including NPI President Richard Spencer, were recently banned by Twitter. Tequila’s account has also been banned since.)

Now, Maggiano’s is apologizing for “inadvertently hosting this meeting, which resulted in hateful sentiment.” In a Facebook post first reported by the Washington City Paper, the restaurant said that it would be donating its $10,000 in profits from Friday to the D.C. office of the Anti-Defamation League.

“I really think that Friday was a win,” says Mike Isaacson, an organizer with Smash Racism DC. “Maggiano’s made a genuine apology and donated as a token of atonement.”

Here’s the statement in full:

On Friday night, Maggiano’s in Friendship Heights was the inadvertent site of a protest that caused us to close our restaurant to protect the safety of our Teammates and Guests.

The protesters were upset because of a banquet we were hosting for a group called the National Policy Institute (NPI). This was a last minute booking made Friday afternoon, and the reservation was made under a different name, therefore we were not aware that NPI was dining with us or what the group represents. After the event, an attendee sent a tweet in which she made a “Sieg Heil salute” in support of Hitler and white supremacy. This expression of support of Hitler is extremely offensive to us, as our restaurant is home to Teammates and Guests of every race, religion and cultural background.

We want to sincerely apologize to the community of Friendship Heights for inadvertently hosting this meeting, which resulted in hateful sentiment. We want you to know that at the suggestion of one of our Guests, we are donating the profits from our restaurant sales on Friday, $10,000, to the DC office of the Anti-Defamation League, which for decades has been working to bring people together in peace and understanding.

An earlier post from the restaurant, screenshotted by a WCP commenter, apologized the disruption for the from the protest but did not mention NPI at all. Instead, it pointed out that Maggiano’s has hosted events for people across the political spectrum, like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

“The only party we favor is the one which serves lasagna with marinara sauce and a good red wine,” the now-deleted post said.

Maggiano’s wasn’t NPI’s first choice, either. The initial location, The Hamilton, cancelled the dinner.

“We didn’t really know the nature of the event,” Hamilton spokeswoman Molly Quigley told The Washington Post. “Once there was a threat of protest and disruption, we canceled it for the safety of our guests and employees and our business.”

The group Smash Racism DC also protested last year’s NPI conference, which was held at the National Press Club. NPI president Richard Spencer said last year’s event was “about people meeting up, not just being an anonymous Twitter handle but building community.”

Here’s how Spencer addressed that community as this year’s conference was winding down, per the New York Times.

He railed against Jews and, with a smile, quoted Nazi propaganda in the original German. America, he said, belonged to white people, whom he called the “children of the sun,” a race of conquerors and creators who had been marginalized but now, in the era of President-elect Donald J. Trump, were “awakening to their own identity.”

As he finished, several audience members had their arms outstretched in a Nazi salute. When Mr. Spencer, or perhaps another person standing near him at the front of the room—it was not clear who—shouted, “Heil the people! Heil victory,” the room shouted it back.
