A grand jury has brought additional charges against Edgar Maddison Welch, the North Carolina man accused of bringing an assault-style rifle into Comet Ping Pong and shooting it.
In addition to the federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, the grand jury indicted Welch under two D.C. laws—assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.
If convicted, he could face a maximum of 35 years in prison, according to The Washington Post. Welch has been in custody since his arrest on December 4.
Prosecutors earlier this week announced that Welch would face federal charges and a federal complaint summarizes the case against him.
Welch walked into the Chevy Chase pizzeria around 3 p.m. that Sunday afternoon with an AR-15, which he fired multiple times, and a revolver. He also pointed his gun at a Comet employee. No one was reported injured.
Police say he told them after his arrest that he “read online that the Comet restaurant was harboring child sex slaves and that he wanted to see for himself if they were there … [He] stated he was armed to help rescue them.”
Part of that online rumor, known as Pizzagate, includes the theory that Comet was harboring kids in the basement, so Welch went searching for them. When he discovered that no basement exists, he surrendered to police. ““The intel on this wasn’t 100 percent,” he admitted to The New York Times.
D.C. Police refer to Pizzagate as a “fictitious online conspiracy theory,” but it has had a real impact. In one text Welch sent to a friend, he said he was “Raiding a pedo ring, possibly sacraficing [sic] the lives of a few for the lives of many,” according to the complaint.
In addition to Welch, Comet Ping Pong has faced death threats and harassment since the Pizzagate theory surfaced shortly before the election on social media sites like 4chan and Reddit. The abuse hasn’t been limited to the pizzeria and its employees—spreading to nearby businesses, musicians who’ve performed at Comet, and more.
