Update: Red Apron Burger Bar will open for business Jan. 12 at 11 a.m.

The District’s burger scene is about to get even more crowded. The meat masters behind Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s local Red Apron Butchery (multiple locations) have announced plans to open Red Apron Burger Bar at 1323 Connecticut Ave. in Dupont Circle.

That space was most recently home to the restaurant group’s fried chicken and doughnut spot GBD, which closed in March. While a firm date has not yet been announced, a spokesperson said they hope to open in mid-January.

Red Apron Burger Bar will certainly have plenty of competition when it opens. Its address is in close proximity to several burger spots, including Shake Shack, Bare Burger, Z Burger, and BGR. But Red Apron’s head butcher, Nathan Anda, is confident his product can stand above the rest.

“I know there are consumers out there who care a lot about even a simple decision like where to get a burger and fries, and want a better option,” Anda said in a statement. “Offering a premium product at an approachable price gives them an easy way to get some of the best food produced by our region’s most conscientious and responsible farmers.”

Red Apron Burger bar will source its beef exclusively from Virginia, which Anda says is the product of years of supply chain development. In line with its whole-animal approach, the restaurant will use dry-aged beef fat in its French fries, making for a decadent product that Anda notes is “also healthier than frying in vegetable oil.”

Burgers will be priced at $5.85 for a single patty and $8.95 for a double. Red Apron Butcher currently serves the “Red Apron Original Burger” for $10.50 at its area stores in Union Market, Penn Quarter, and Merrifield, Virginia.

The new restaurant will also feature a hop-forward beer program to complement the burgers, developed by NRG Beer Director Greg Engert. So expect plenty of pilsners and IPAs on tap to pair with the juicy, Virginia-beef patties. There will be both standard and rotating options.

Red Apron Burger Bar will be open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (kitchen closes at 10 p.m., last call at 10:30 p.m.), and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. (kitchen closes at 11 p.m., last call at 11:30 p.m.). Happy hour will run Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
