Count Jeff Bezos among the power players posting up in Kalorama.
The owner of the Washington Post and CEO of Amazon purchased what will become the biggest house in the city, The Washington Post reports.
UrbanTurf reported this week that the site of the former Textile Museum, comprised of two four-story houses that had been merged to create the museum, “quietly changed hands in 2016 to the current owner that will renovate it as a private residence.”
That anonymous buyer, as it turns out, was Bezos. He purchased the property under the name “The Cherry Revocable Trust” for $23 million on October 21, 2016, according to the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. According to The Post, that was $1 million over the asking price.
The previous owner, also anonymous, bought the the 27,000 square-foot property for $19 million in May 2015 after the Textile Museum relocated to the George Washington University campus in 2013.
But it doesn’t seem like Bezos, who lives in Seattle, plans on becoming a permanent resident of the District. “The home is expected to be an East-coast pied a terre for the family — allowing him to avoid hotel bills — but the ample square footage means there’s plenty of room for entertaining,” writes The Post.
When he does swing into the neighborhood, Bezos will be blocks away from the Obamas and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s family, both of whom are moving to Kalorama when the new administration takes office.
The homes that comprise the property, which have 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms between them, according to Redfin, are each on the National Register of Historic Places.
