Hundreds of people met at the Friendship Heights Metro on Wednesday evening, many wearing their best glitter, rainbow, and metallic gear, for a dance party with purpose—to twerk at Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s rental house.
“We are exercising our First Amendment right to express that we feel that homophobia and transphobia is wrong and should be resisted,” Firas Nasr, a founding organizer of WERK for Peace, told DCist earlier this week. They chose Chevy Chase, Pence’s temporary home, to protest his anti-LGBTQ record, including his staunch opposition to gay marriage and signing of an Indiana bill that allowed businesses to discriminate against LGBT individuals in his state.
Nasr’s group co-organized the event with DisruptJ20, serving as the first major action for the D.C. Counter-Inaugural Committee.
And dance they did, for about an hour and a half—though not exactly on Pence’s lawn. Instead, they posted up a few blocks away and quickly drew the attention of neighbors.
“I love this,” 76-year-old Chevy Chase resident Mary Ann Carmody told The Washington Post. “I love the world. It’s wonderful to see people on the street like this. We’re lucky we can do this.”
Pence’s Chevy Chase neighbors have previously expressed their disagreement with his policies by hanging rainbow flags and “Trust Women” signs.
Despite protesters’ calls for “Daddy Pence” to come and dance, the VP-elect was a no-show. According to Ellison Barber of WUSA 9, Pence left the house before the dancers arrived.

If this video of @werkforpeace organizer Firas Nasr leading the protest doesn’t make you want to become a political organizer, nothing will. pic.twitter.com/tBHiRMOsa4
