About a week since charging a third suspect in the case, D.C. police announced the arrest of Cyheme Hall today in connection to the death of Deeniquia Dodds, a transgender woman who was fatally shot on July 4.

22-year-old Dodds was the first transgender murder victim in the District since 2012.

A Metropolitan Police Department release noted last Thursday that officers were searching for Hall and had arrested Montee Tyree Johnson, charging him with first degree murder while armed. In September, officials also arrested Jalonte Little and Shareem Hall and charged them with first degree felony murder while armed.

And today police charged Hall, a 21-year-old from Southeast, with first degree murder while armed.

The shooting took place around 3 a.m. on July 4. Police arrived on the 200 block of Division Avenue NE and found Dodds suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. She was rushed to a local hospital, and pronounced dead on July 13.

Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham said that robbery was the likely motive for Dodds’ killing, and there was no indication that the suspects and victim knew one another.

Dodds worked as a prostitute, Joeann Lewis, who raised her, told NBC 4. Lewis said that family members, who called her Dee Dee, often worried about her safety.

And many members of the transgender community were also troubled after Dodds’ death, accusing MPD of waiting too long to disclose the shooting and misgendering her, among other gripes.
