Amazon launched restaurant delivery service today in D.C.

As of today, Amazon is delivering food from more than 150 restaurants to Washingtonians, the company’s latest offering for members of its Prime service. But like many—though certainly not all—of its competitors, Amazon won’t be bringing lunch to workers in Deanwood or dinner to families in Woodridge.

Those neighborhoods are in at least four zip codes within the District’s borders not included in its Amazon Restaurants service area.

“We’re confined by where we’re able to deliver within a time constraint,” says Amazon spokesperson Amanda Ip. The company guarantees food delivery within one hour. Orders must be $20 or more and there is no delivery charge to users.

Ip says an algorithm determines which areas Amazon can serve given the restaurants that it has on board, but declined to go into any specifics about why certain neighborhoods are excluded.

While delivery is not currently available in Woodridge’s 20018 or Takoma’s 20012, the two zip codes sandwiched in between will be served by Amazon Restaurants. Similarly, Anacostia’s 20020 zip code is within the service area, but the adjoining neighborhoods north (20019) and south (20032) are not.

Amazon declined to provide a full list of neighborhoods where restaurant delivery is available, but users can check their individual zip code online (Ip also notes that people can sign up for an alert when the company expands to their area).

“We are rapidly expanding and bringing more and more restaurants on board,” Ip says. She could not say if the company’s sales team is actively working to reach restaurants in the currently excluded neighborhoods.

When the company rolled out same-day shipping for Prime members two years ago, it excluded all zip codes east of the Anacostia River and another four in Wards 5 and 6. D.C. was one of several cities where white-minority zip codes were excluded from same-day shipping, a Bloomberg investigation later found. The entirety of the District is now covered by the service. When the company rolled out free two-hour delivery service late last year, all of D.C. was immediately covered.

But in excluding several neighborhoods from its restaurant delivery service, Amazon isn’t alone. Residents in Wards 7 and 8—where full-service grocers and sit-down restaurants are few and far between—frequently aren’t served by similar meal delivery services, though they are often within easy driving distance of corridors that are brimming with restaurants. Caviar, Door Dash, Fetch Coffee, Scratch DC, and Postmates all initially or still don’t deliver east of the river.

For those who are in the service area, Amazon Restaurant is available only to Prime members on orders of $20 or more. Delivery is free and the company pledges there is no mark-up of menu items. If a user finds something listed at a lower price on the restaurant’s online menu, Amazon will refund the cost. Restaurants, rather than consumers, reportedly bear the costs, as Amazon is charging a significantly heftier fee than its delivery competitors.
