Metrorail riders on the northern end of the Green Line are about to be hit with a couple of station closures over the course of a month.
Metro announced today that SafeTrack Surge 14 will shut down Greenbelt Metro station throughout the entire surge from April 15 until May 14. The transit agency is also closing College Park station for the first half of the surge.
Officials originally planned to have single tracking during the surge with all stations remaining open, according to a Metro release. However, they say this would have taken more time to get the maintenance work completed and interrupted customers elsewhere along the Green Line.
So officials chose to do a two-part surge that includes station closures, but with a shorter completion period.
Phase one will run from April 15-29 with the closures of Greenbelt and College Park stations. Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Greenbelt and Prince George’s Plaza and make stops at College Park.
Between Prince George’s Plaza and Branch Avenue stations, trains will run every 6 to 8 minutes during rush hour, which is “close to regular service,” according to the release. Yellow Rush+ trains won’t operate during this time.
The second phase will run from April 30 through May 14 and only Greenbelt station will remain closed. And free shuttle buses will run between Greenbelt and College Park. Elsewhere on the Green Line, trains will continue to run every 6 to 8 minutes during rush hours and Yellow Rush+ trains won’t operate.
Metro officials announced earlier this year that the entire SafeTrack program will last through June.
