A 75-year-old man has died after being stabbed on the Anacostia River Trail two weeks ago, according to police.
U.S. Park Police and Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the scene near Kenilworth Park on March 21 to find Leoncio Loza suffering from multiple stab wounds, according to an MPD release. Fire officials took him to a local hospital by helicopter where he was admitted in critical but stable condition.
But police say that Loza succumbed to his injuries on March 31.
Park police released a description of the suspect—a black male, around 20 years old, 5’10” tall, with a medium build. Police said he was wearing a green jacket and dark colored pants when he was last seen running north on the trail.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicated his cause of death was complications of blunt and sharp force injuries to the head and neck. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
About four hours after Loza’s stabbing, another elderly man was also attacked along the trail. Police say he was “struck in the head and body.”
MPD offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of people responsible for homicides in the city. Police are asking anyone with information on Loza’s case to call 202-727-9099 or remain anonymous by texting 50411.
