Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday this year, giving even more excuses for early openings, all-day happy hours, and parties that are sure to go well into the evening. Here are some picks for events happening in D.C. this week and throughout the weekend (and some breakfast picks to mop it all up). We’ll continue updating this list as more events are announced.
Decades
1219 Connecticut Ave. NW
This retro, cross-generational club is planning a special happy hour Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on its newly opened rooftop. There will be free tacos, $5 Coronas, margaritas, and tequila shots, hookahs available for $20, and more.
Del Campo
777 I St. NW
Del Campo is reprising its rooftop party series this Cinco de Mayo starting at 6 p.m. Tickets for the al fresco celebration are $35 and include unlimited Taco Bamba tacos as well as music and a cash bar. Open bar wristbands can be purchased at the door for $30.
Espita Mezcaleria
1250 9th St. NW
Espita is well known for its mezcal selection and cocktails, but this Cinco de Mayo it’s focusing on a beer collaboration with 3 Stars Brewing. The limited brew is available only at Espita, and it will be $1 off on Friday. And yes, there will be special mezcal flights available too.
GCDC
1730 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
From May 3 through May 5, GCDC is serving a gooey fajita grilled cheese. The sandwich is filled with queso fresco, chicken, red and green peppers, and white onions. It’s served with fresh green tomatillo sauce for dipping. It’s $10 at lunch at $13 at dinner. For drinks, there will be $3 Coronas and Patron Silver pours for $9.
Mezcalero
3714 14th St. NW
Happy hour stars early on Friday at Mezcalero, with $5 margaritas and $3.50 beers starting at 11 a.m. The patio party will get going at 3 p.m. with an outdoor bar and build-your-own taco station for $2 each. Other bites like quesadillas and tortas will be $5 a piece. There will be $3 tequila and $4 mezcal shots from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and a DJ will play until 2 a.m. (and yes, the taco bar will stay open).
Mission
1606 20th St. NW
Mission opens at 11 a.m. on Cinco de Mayo, ready to serve its full lunch and bottomless brunch menus. Drink choices include $4.50 Tecate cans, $4.50 pints of Dos Equis, $8.00 house margaritas ($28 for a pitcher), and $7.00 El Jimador and $9 Don Julio blanco tequila shots. Standard happy hour runs 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. as well.
Pepita
4000 Wilson Blvd.
Mike Isabella’s Mexican outpost is getting the tequila pouring going at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, with an outdoor bash to follow at 5 p.m. Entry to the patio party is $5 and grants access to drink specials, suckling pig tacos for purchas, piñatas and music. Chips and salsa are included all evening with admission.
Taqueria del Barrio
821 Upshur St. NW
Petworth newcomer Taqueria del Barrio is throwing a party on Friday with bottomless food (think tacos and wings) and drinks from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be margaritas, beer from Schlafly and Ballast Point, and a special punch made with D.C.’s own One Eight vodka.
Tico
1926 14th St. NW
Michael Schlow’s Latin American tapas restaurant is celebrating Cinco de Mayo all week long, starting with a Don Julio tequila flight for $20. There will be drink specials each day of the week, and Friday will feature drinks and snacks ($6-$12) like ricotta and queso fresco dumplings with avocado salsa or tacos with chicken, refried beans and serrano salsa. Food and drink specials will be available at the bar starting at 3:00 p.m.
