WEDNESDAY, MAY 3

Guitarist Jacques Lesure brings a band of excellent local musicians to Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Al Margolis, Tom Hamilton, Zach Rowden use a mix of electronic and acoustic instruments for an evening of experimental sounds at Rhizome. 8 p.m. $10 suggested donation.

Future Prospect is a Richmond-based fusion band that is playing Twins Jazz tonight. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

Florida-based guitarist Nate Najar plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $22 plus minimum and surcharge.

THURSDAY, MAY 4

The Kennedy Center hosts a tribute to the great Abbey Lincoln, featuring NEA Jazz Master/vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, drummer/music director Terri Lyne Carrington, vocalist Dianne Reeves, and vocalist Esperanza Spalding. 8 p.m. Tickets are sold out but it’s worth contacting the box office for last minute availability.

Area pianist Joe Vetter plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. $10 plus minimum and surcharge.

The late John Coltrane is one of jazz’s great icons. His son, Ravi Coltrane, has forged an impressive career for himself, including a 2017 Grammy nomination. The younger ‘Trane brings a group to Blues Alley on Thursday and Friday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $35-$40 plus minimum and surcharge.

The Feedel Band combines jazz, funk, and traditional Ethiopian music to create a truly groovy sound. They play the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 9:30 p.m. $10 at the door.

FRIDAY, MAY 5

Saxophonist Paul Carr leads students from his Jazz Academy of Music on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Vocalist Jane Monheit and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton pay tribute to Ella Fitzgerald at the Kennedy Center. 7 and 9:30 p.m. sets. $60-$70.

Jimmy Greene‘s career was on a big upswing as 2012 came to a close. He was getting positive critical reviews, had released a number of albums, and appeared as a sideman on dozens more. Then, the senseless killings at Sandy Hook Elementary took the life of his six-year old daughter. Greene has used music as a form of therapy. He received the 2013 State of Connecticut Governor’s Arts Award in Music and is once again performing with world class musicians. Greene comes to The Hamilton along with Eric Byrd‘s trio. 8 p.m. $15-$34.75.

Rhizome stages a benefit concert on Friday and Saturday to help support its future programming efforts. Each night’s show takes place at 8 p.m. and a partial list of the featured artists includes Tristan Welch, Nate Scheible, and Big Plastic Finger. $10 suggested donation.

Rising area vocalist Danielle Wertz teams up with pianist extraordinaire Mark Meadows for 9 and 11 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. $15 plus minimum and surcharge.

SATURDAY, MAY 6

René Marie is a singer’s singer who started her career fairly late, devoting herself to music in 1999 at age 42. She is touring behind her new album, Sound of Red, and brings the new songs to Blues Alley on Saturday and Sunday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $30-$35 plus minimum and surcharge.

Mr. Henry’s hosts vocalist Renee Tannenbaum. 8 to 11 p.m. Two item per person minimum.

Veronica Swift plays The Alex from 8 to 11 p.m. $20 minimum, reservations recommended.

Storm Large, Pink Martini’s singer, brings her cabaret show to AMP on Saturday and Sunday. 8 p.m. $30-$40.

SUNDAY, MAY 7

Cuerpo y Alma is a collaboration of flamenco guitarists, dancers, and world music and jazz musicians joined by amazing guest artists. Featured performers include Debra “La Furia” Belo (dance), Michael “Miguelito” Perez (guitar), Kamel Zennia (vocals), Hector Barez (percussion), and Maksim “El Gordo” Tsvetovat. The collective plays the Bossa Bistro & Lounge on Sunday with a 6 p.m. flamenco dance class followed by a musical performance. $10 at the door.

Vocalist W. Allen Taylor brings a band to Alice’s Jazz & Cultural Society. 6 to 9 p.m. $5 at the door.

Rhizome launches its African Diaspora Music series, whose shows will take place every Sunday in May. The first show features the duo of vocalist Akua Allrich and Kris Funn, along with griot instrumentalist and vocalist Amadou Kouyate. 4:30 to 7 p.m. $10 in advance/$12 at the door.
