D.C. better get ready for a new Congressional overlord, because House Oversight Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz has officially resigned, effective June 30.

“After careful consideration and long discussion with my wife, Julie, we agree the time has come for us to move on from this part of our life,” the Utah Republican writes in a letter to his 3rd District constituents.

Chaffetz announced in mid-April that he would not be running for reelection in 2018 to “return to the private sector,” and mere days later said he hadn’t “ruled out the possibility of leaving early.”

In an interview with Politico published April 20, he said that his new job search had already begun. “I started poking around to see what I might be worth and what sort of possibilities are there,” Chaffetz said. “And I got a series of ‘Let us know when you’re serious.’ Well now I can say, ‘Can you tell I am serious?’… I’ll take a little bit of time to sort out. I’d be thrilled to have a television relationship. But there’s a number of things I’d like to do.”

Washingtonian reported over the weekend that Chaffetz has been telling his colleagues in the House that he’s joining Fox News, where viewers have been able to see his grinning mug for years.

Non-Fox viewing D.C. residents might recognize Chaffetz from his many attempts to curb self-autonomy in the District, including on issues like same-sex marriage, medical marijuana, reproductive discrimination, and more. Who can forget the time he threatened to jail Mayor Muriel Bowser for implementing weed legalization?

He busied the House Oversight Committee on a (failed) mission to prevent D.C. from enacting medical-aid-in-dying at the same time that National Security Advisor Michael Flynn was fired from the White House. He told reporters that the Flynn investigation was “taking care of itself.” D.C. residents, on the other hand, seemed to require his committee’s more immediate attention. Many of his residents appeared to disagree at a town hall, screaming at him to “Do your job!”

And now, just as he says he has his “subpoena pen ready” so the Oversight Committee can get its hands on fired FBI Director James Comey’s memos, he’s going to hand the pen off to someone else. (The Salt Lake Tribune has a good story about the fight in Utah over the special election to fill his seat.)

“Another congressional representative from somewhere else in America will assume the committee chair and have the same ability to interfere with locally passed laws by locally elected representatives,” said Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen in a statement when Chaffetz announced he wouldn’t run for reelection.

Indeed, in a Republican-led Congress, it doesn’t seem likely that whoever replaces Chaffetz as oversight chair will be less interested in meddling in D.C. Reports indicate that South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, who headed up the Benghazi investigation, will likely take over the committee, though The Washington Post reports he may face a challenge in the form of Jim Jordan, a GOP Freedom Caucus member from Ohio. The Republican Steering Committee will decide on June 5, according to The Post.

“I hope whoever replaces me will do even better,” Chaffetz said in his letter to constituents today. Us too, buddy. Us too.
