A decades-old bookstore in D.C. is opening a second location at a new Union Market development this fall.

Politics And Prose, which we’ve called one of the city’s best independent bookstores, will occupy a renovated warehouse alongside other retail, residential, and office spaces near the food hall in Northeast, according to a release from the bookstore.

The store was founded in 1984 by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade. It was bought in 2010 by “Washington powerhouses” Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine and has remained an institution in D.C. hosting dozens of author talks and events each month. (It’s also where two 90-something-year-old book lovers had their first date last year.)

In 2014, Politics and Prose began managing the book sections at multiple Busboys and Poets locations. However, Busboys recently decided to run their bookstores in-house and Politics and Prose is phasing out its operations through the end of June.

The Northeast branch will be smaller than the flagship on Connecticut Avenue NW, which renovated its cafe and expanded food and drink service last spring.

The new location comes with an attached event space, and the owners plan to have larger events at Union Market’s Dock 5 Warehouse and other places nearby. They’re also exploring the possibility of classes, workshops, and children’s activities in the neighborhood.
