After a successful first season pouring suds to business and happy hour crowds at 21st and M St. NW last summer, Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s Canteen beer garden is back for 2017. This time, it’s setting up shop in Shaw at 1923 9th St. NW.
The new location, opening this Friday, just off U St. and close to popular beer spot Dacha (1600 7th St. NW), will feature 20 draft lines—twice as many as last year’s selection. The change of scenery goes toward fulfilling the original mission of Canteen, says its beer director, Greg Engert.
“The idea was to be able to bring all these amazing beers to neighborhoods around the city,” says Engert, who is also behind many of the city’s top beer programs including Bluejacket, Chuchkey, and The Sovereign.
Canteen’s opening week drafts will be designed with variety-and summer weather—in mind.
“We’re not going to have a bunch of barrel-aged imperial stouts,” Engert says.
Expect to see German lagers, Belgian ales, hoppy brews, and more. There will also be local choices from Bluejacket, Ocelot, and Richmond’s The Veil Brewing Co. Beers will be served in full pours only, perfect for lingering drinking sessions. Anyone who doesn’t want beer can sip on wine, cider, and the return of Canteen’s bourbon slushies.
The bar will also feature food items from sister restaurant Red Apron Butcher and welcome food trucks in regularly. Outside food is also encouraged.
Here is the opening beer list so far:
