If you wanted to buy tickets for the grand opening of a new venue at The Wharf, headlined by the Foo Fighters, you had mere moments this morning before the message “Sold Out” began to appear.
All 6,000 tickets have already been snapped up for the first concert at The Anthem, a forthcoming concert hall from the owners of the 9:30 Club.
“Considering that show, that was completely predictable,” says Audrey Schaefer, communications director for IMP, the company that programs and operates The Anthem, along with 9:30 Club, the Lincoln Theatre, and Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.
Some of the tickets (she declined to say how many) were made available yesterday for members of IMP’s loyalty program, and those “sold out instantly as well,” she says.
Already, tickets for the October 12 concert are reselling on sites like StubHub for more than $1,000 (as noted first by @rocketmanfw). The original price was between $100-175. Schaefer says she saw one available that would cost more than $30,000.
But she warns people against buying the resold tickets, even if their bank accounts can bear it, because the tickets are non-transferrable. That means that “the ticket purchaser must be the person to enter the building,” per Ticketfly.
Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl has a longstanding relationship with the 9:30 Club, first as a Virginia teen who’d visit concerts and then as a performer with Scream, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters.
As The Anthem readied for its grand opening, owners knew who should perform the first concert at the $60 million venue. “There was never any question about who would open. There was no Plan B,” said the chairman of I.M.P. and co-owner of the 9:30 Club and The Anthem, Seth Hurwitz, in a statement. “It was always just the Foos.”
Is there a Plan B for people who didn’t score tickets? Well, fans can take heart that, earlier this month, the band released a surprise new single, “Run,” with a video directed by Grohl. While Variety says there’s no news yet on a new album, if they release one, expect the Foos to return to D.C. for more shows.
In the meantime, The Anthem announced this morning that Lorde will perform at the venue on April 8, 2018, with tickets going on sale on June 23.
Schaefer says to expect more in the coming weeks, as The Anthem introduces a slate of concerts to round out the end of 2017.
