Update, 6/20/17: Symba’s new family says that, a few days into his new life, the cat is beginning to adjust.
“Symba’s current state has been improving today, which we are pretty pleased about,” owner Kiah Berkeley says on Monday evening. “He loves having his whole back scratched (poor guy can’t reach his own back to scratch it) and has been purring a lot over that.”
She says he’s gradually warming up to the family, though his obesity “prevents him from moving much, cleaning himself, scratching himself” and more. He’s also on medication for fleas and dealing with sores on his belly.
He’s a picky eater, too, which may be due to stress. The family is seeking the advice of Reddit to find foods other than cut-up shrimp or tuna to eat. They’ve also made a Facebook page so interested folks can follow Symba’s progress.
On Monday night, for the first time, Symba jumped up on Berkeley’s bed. “We gave him scratches and he loved it.”
