It is an oft-observed online rule that we can’t have nice things, because all of our most adored viral sensations turn out to be problematic for one reason or another.

Ken Bone, the friendly, red sweatered human meme, turned out to be an alleged coal hack with a love of Jennifer Lawrence’s butt hole.

Or how about Pizza Rat, an enterprising (you guessed it) rat captured on camera dragging a slice of pizza, which turned out to be an elaborate hoax?

So, of course, when a 35-pound cat began making the rounds on the internet, it was only a matter of time before the backlash struck.

The Humane Rescue Alliance announced that large feline Symba was up for adoption on Thursday, and by first thing Friday morning, he already had a new home. (Update: the family has started a Facebook page so fans can stay in touch with Symba.)

“The couple that adopted Symba had heard about the story and they came right away to our New York Avenue adoption center, and were there when we opened,” says Matt Williams, spokesperson for the Humane Rescue Alliance. “They met Symba and loved Symba. It was a good match. The adopter had previous experience with overweight pets and it was one of those causes that she likes to take on.”

Williams says that Symba’s newfound fame is good for the Humane Rescue Alliance more broadly because, “even though other people may have missed out on adopting Symba, we certainly have plenty [of animals] to go around.” He estimates that the animal welfare group generally has about 100 pets up for adoption, many of which are cats because it’s currently kitten season.

Williams says that three to four people physically came to the shelter on Friday looking to adopt Symba, but were too late. “Several of them did adopt other cats while they were there,” he says, adding that both of their shelters got dozens of calls and emails from across the country.

Wow, what a happy ending. Doesn’t seem like much to be upset about here, right? WRONG. And because no one else has started the inevitable boomerang, here are some think pieces about Symba’s adoption that we’re currently ready to commission.
