A college-bound teenager has died after being shot in the head by a stray bullet in Northeast D.C.
Police found 17-year-old Jamahri Sydnor suffering from a gunshot wound inside of a car on August 10, according to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department. She was driving the car when two shooters, who were hiding behind bushes, opened fire at a crowd of people across the street.
Sydnor was taken to a local hospital in grave condition and passed away on August 12.
On the day of the shooting, police announced the arrest of a 21-year-old Philip McDaniel who was charged with assault with intent to kill. His upgraded charges are pending.
Officials also found another bystander, a male victim, suffering from a gunshot wound to the buttocks at the scene in the 1400 block of Saratoga Avenue. He was taken to a local hospital.
Sydnor had just graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School where she was captain of the cheerleading squad, sang in the choir, and was a peer counselor.
“There was never a day I saw her she didn’t have a smile on her face,” Patrice Arrington, a staff member at Wilson told The Washington Post. “Even if there was something going on in her life, she never let anyone see that.”
Timia Hargrove, a friend since grade school, told the newspaper that Sydnor “would be the person you looked for if you were having a bad day.”
Sydnor had planned to attend Florida A&M University in the fall. “Her mom was telling me it’s the only thing she could talk about was starting her college career,” D.C. police Chief Peter Newsham told News4.
Police are still searching for two additional suspects.
