Dave Chappelle and John Oliver used their starpower to get D.C. Public Schools trending on Twitter during the Emmys on Sunday night.
While co-presenting the award for best directing for a comedy alongside Melissa McCarthy, Chapelle admitted that that he skipped his rehearsal and went off-script.
“Shout out to D.C. Public Schools—here we go,” said Chapelle, an alumni of the recently-modernized Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
Later in the evening, Oliver followed-up Chapelle’s shoutout and upped the ante during his acceptance of the Emmy for best writing for a variety series, his HBO show Last Week Tonight.
“Like Dave Chappelle, I would like to also unexpectedly thank D.C. Public Schools,” said Oliver, who dedicated a segment of Last Week Tonight to advocating for D.C statehood in 2015.
“Because I think it would be great if it started trending on Twitter for no reason tonight whatsoever,” Oliver said, before telling viewers to use the hashtag #DCPublicSchool when tweeting about the Emmys.
Within minutes, it became a top trending topic nationwide.
