A convenience store will soon replace ritzy home furnishing company Restoration Hardware on Wisconsin Ave in Georgetown. A year after the first announcement, the District has officially granted Wawa the permits it needs to build out its second D.C. location here.

According to the retailer’s press release last June, this won’t be just any convenience store: this one will be “upscale” and “urban,” much like their 19th Street NW location.

It will include “customized architectural elements that meet the historical needs and requirements of the Old Georgetown Historic District.” So if you were looking to buy your hoagies from an architecturally and historically faithful convenience store, looks like you’re in luck.

Georgetown residents have been testy about the chain’s new location here for the last year. Washington Business Journal reports that Joe Gibbons, the area’s ANC commissioner, wrote to the Old Georgetown Board with complaints about the potential for disruption of the intersection due to the loading and unloading of merchandise. People also apparently took issue with the awnings proposed in the original design, which have since been removed, the light levels in the store, and merchandise being displayed in the windows.

Whatever their complaints, looks like Wawa is making its way here, anyhow. The Pennsylvanian-beloved chain is planning two more stores in D.C., one in Columbia Heights and another in Tenleytown. Its first store downtown opened last year on 19th Street NW. As part of a wider expansion, the company is projecting a total of 30-50 stores in the District.
