Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said at a press conference on Monday that she hadn’t heard the audio released by ProPublic of sobbing immigrant children being separated from their parents at the U.S. southern border.
When she dined at a Mexican restaurant near the White House on Tuesday evening, more than a dozen protesters confronted her, playing the audio of weeping children and chanting “Kirstjen Nielsen, you’re a villain, locking up immigrant children.”
And on Friday morning, activists showed up at her house this morning to play the sounds of those traumatized children. “How do you sleep at night?” demonstrators chanted. “With babies crying for their families?”
Protesters passed out fliers to Nielsen’s neighbors with her face and the text “Beware of Child Snatcher. Kirstjen Nielsen is one of Donald Trump’s most ruthless henchman. Under her leadership, DHS has ripped 2,300 immigrant children from their families and imprisoned them in cases. This human rights abuser lives in your neighborhood.”
CREDO Action organized the “flashprotest,” and the groups Jewish Action and CASA in Action tweeted from the event, which had about 25-30 people in attendance, according to Heidi Hess, co-director of CREDO Action.
Hess says that the neighbors didn’t appear angry with the demonstration. “It’s time for there to be a social cost for collaboration with Trump,” she says.
We are now playing the pro publica audio on loudspeakers outside Nielsen’s home. She can wake up to the sounds of children screaming for their parents this morning. And later today, she can resign. #FamiliesBelongTogether #moralemergency #FreeOurFuture pic.twitter.com/jqeRfsxqV7

The Huffington Post reports that Nielsen appeared to be home during the demonstration.

Update: Nielsen is hiding in her house and won’t come out to explain her cruel and inhumane actions. Her neighbors are pretty interested, however. Secretary, it doesn’t have to be this way. Resign. #FamiliesBelongTogether #moralemergency #FreeOurFuture pic.twitter.com/xC0KtzQsrx

Protesters shouted “Shame!” at Nielsen as she got into her car.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that purports to end family separation by detaining families together. It’s unclear if or when the 2,300 children already separated from their families will be reunited.
Facilities in the D.C. region currently hold dozens of immigrant children, according to the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition.
In a statement Jewish Action CEO Stosh Cotler said that the “Trump administration’s terrorization of immigrant families is a moral emergency—business as usual is unacceptable. Sec. Nielsen should hear the cries of these children being mocked by her officers as she drinks her morning coffee. The ‘zero tolerance’ must end immediately. Until it does, the leaders of the Trump Administration need to be confronted with the consequences of their unconscionable actions.”
